I thought it was a classic case of 'you get what you pay for', and having cheaped out on this £7 replacement dongle ( my SB Components 8188CUS dongle's radio subsystem seems to have gone FUBAR), I was beginning to think I'd thrown money away, when I realised that TP-Link's 'support' of this dongle for RPi is stretching a marketing term to breaking point.
